A Member’s Possible Next Steps

What are the next steps for an advanced driver and Member of GAM?

There are five (independent) options (in no specific order):

1. Become an Observer

Training will be given by GAM Observers to prepare you to become an Observer. The process starts with a Member becoming a Trainee Observer ; when assessed as ready by GAM’s Chief Observer, the Trainee is entered for the examination to become a National Observer, which is conducted by IAM RoadSmart examiners. Not only can you share your love of advanced driving and help improve the standard of driving in GAM’s area, but it helps you keep up your own high driving standards.

2. Take the Masters test

Become a Master, the highest civilian driving award, by taking the Masters course provided by IAM RoadSmart.

3. Become a Fellow

The benefits of Fellowship and how to achieve it are described by IAM RoadSmart on their Fellows page.

4. Take the Test again with the aim of achieving a F1RST

Retake the Advanced Driving Test with some extra coaching to try to achieve a F1RST pass.

5. Take an active role in the Group

GAM relies on volunteers to sustain the Group’s ability to provide advanced driving coaching to deliver increased road safety around Guildford and its environs. Therefore, GAM needs active volunteers to take on a number of roles within the Group, some of which will gain a seat on the committee. The current vacancies are described here.
