Yesterday South Yorkshire’s senior coroner returned a verdict of unlawful killing following a collision between a lorry and a stationary car on a smart motorway stretch of the M1. One national newspaper journalist has stated that “the only smart thing to do is to avoid driving on the inside lane of any motorway with all-lane running. I don’t care what it says in the Highway Code about pulling over to the left after overtaking.” Last night, Grant Shapps, Transport Secretary, demanded an “urgent meeting” with Highways England to discuss its progress in making the new motorway network safer.
