Around one third of all road traffic collisions (RTCs) in Britain involve someone driving or riding as part of their job and countless other RTCs involve people travelling to or from their workplace.\u00a0  Although the risks cannot be completely controlled<strong>, employers or companies who engage drivers and riders must take all reasonable steps to manage these risks <\/strong>and do everything reasonably practicable to protect people from harm in the same way as they would in a fixed workplace.\u00a0HSE and the Department for Transport have worked with stakeholders to create\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/lnks.gd\/l\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDEsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMTA5MDcuNDU1NjEyNTEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL3d3dy5oc2UuZ292LnVrL3JvYWRzYWZldHkvaW5kZXguaHRtP3V0bV9zb3VyY2U9Z292ZGVsaXZlcnkmdXRtX21lZGl1bT1lbWFpbCZ1dG1fY2FtcGFpZ249cm9hZC1zYWZldHkmdXRtX3Rlcm09dGV4dC1saW5rJnV0bV9jb250ZW50PXJvYWQtc2FmZXR5LTctc2VwLTIxIn0.JZco8fRFcHL8TZ42LJJI_BZXCihXboOjCenLBR0zwI0\/s\/511897126\/br\/111953870386-l\" target=\"_blank\">new \u2018Driving and riding safely for work\u2019 webpages<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The HSE have recently announced clear, simple guidance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>for employers and those who engage drivers and riders on how to make sure the journey, driver and vehicle are safe<br \/><\/li><li>for workers and those who drive and ride for work on their responsibilities&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years there have been significant developments in driving technologies, employment status and driving practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new webpages explain the responsibilities of anyone who engages workers to drive and ride for work, whether in an HGV or on a two-wheeled vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an employer you have a duty to make sure\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/simple-health-safety\/training\">workers are adequately trained<\/a>\u00a0at no cost to them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>giving priority to those at highest risk, for example drivers or riders with high annual mileage, poor accident records, or vulnerable workers;<\/li><li><strong>whether drivers and riders need extra training to carry out their duties safely, such as using defensive driving techniques<\/strong>, or how to load and unload safely;<\/li><li>whether drivers and riders understand how and when to use in-vehicle and additional technology;<\/li><li>training about other road users, for example cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians;<\/li><li>if drivers and riders need training on how to assess risks while they are on the road;<\/li><li>how to assess training needs periodically, including refresher training;<\/li><li><strong>whether your workers need advanced driver training<\/strong>;<\/li><li>the benefits of your drivers and riders holding a full driving licence for powered two-wheelers;<\/li><li>how to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/driver-cpc-training\">ensure your training providers are competent<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more information on how employers can obtain cost effective Advanced Driver training from qualified Observers, contact Guildford Advanced Motorists.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For most people, driving or riding will be the most dangerous work activity they do.
