{"id":1395,"date":"2020-04-24T12:21:58","date_gmt":"2020-04-24T11:21:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/guildford-iam.org.uk\/?page_id=1395"},"modified":"2026-01-21T21:07:16","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T21:07:16","slug":"introduction-to-the-gam-website","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/guildford-iam.org.uk\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Welcome to our website and thank you for taking the time to find out something about us.&nbsp;<em>Guildford Advanced Motorists<\/em>, GAM for short, is a local registered charity run by volunteers focused on improving road safety through enhancing driving skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We do this by delivering the&nbsp;<em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iamroadsmart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IAM RoadSmart<\/a><\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;<em>Advanced Driver Course<\/em>. This is based on the UK&nbsp;<em>Police Drivers\u2019 Handbook<\/em>&nbsp;called&nbsp;<em>\u201cRoadcraft\u201d<\/em>. This single word encapsulates what we are trying to achieve and is demonstrated by what IAM RoadSmart calls&nbsp;<em>\u201cthe system of car control\u201d<\/em>. This is a methodical approach to managing everyday driving hazards. Advanced drivers should be able be able to drive in a safe, smooth and efficient manner at all times. One of GAM\u2019s bylines is that we coach how to make \u201cSafe, Legal progress\u201d. Our Associate Members, who are those undertaking the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iamroadsmart.com\/courses\/advanced-driver-course-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Advanced Driver Course<\/a><\/em>, not only tell us that they aspire to achieving the accolade of&nbsp;<em>Advanced Driver<\/em>, but also derive great satisfaction from improving their skill behind the wheel. For many this makes driving a more relaxing and satisfying experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GAM and IAM RoadSmart Members are a special breed of drivers, many going on to higher levels of driving achievement through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iamroadsmart.com\/courses-services\/for-individuals\/iam-roadsmart-masters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Masters<\/a>,\u00a0Fellow, becoming\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iamroadsmart.com\/get-involved\/become-an-observer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Observers<\/a>, Mature Driver assessment and refresher programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GAM is an approved provider of the&nbsp;<em>Advanced Driver Course<\/em>&nbsp;and is fully integrated with the procedures and policies of IAM RoadSmart, also a UK registered charity.&nbsp; GAM\u2019s &nbsp;fully trained team of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tide.theimi.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IMI<\/a>-approved volunteer Observers are at the sharp end of providing coaching in best driving practice during what we call \u201cobserved runs\u201d carried out&nbsp;in an Associate Member\u2019s own vehicle. The live coaching sessions are supported by a detailed course Handbook and other face-to-face and virtual training sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Find out more by contacting us, or looking at the detail in the GAM and IAM RoadSmart websites.
